Status and Stuff

So, here’s the Friday status update. What? You’ve never seen this before? Go back and look! OH, wait, stop… It’s new. I guess I’ve never done one of these before.

Shattered is in sort of a limbo while I wait on a couple more readers. Once the feedback from them is in, I’ll be taking most of my weekends getting the second revision and edits done, which I expect will take a month. Then it’ll be publish time, and you can finally read it.

SotR has a deadline for the first draft of March 25th. I’m making good progress on it (if you followed my tweets @mark_fassett, you’d get daily updates), and I don’t foresee any huge problems making the date.

I hope to have an update to StoryBox this weekend, too. It won’t have any big major feature changes, but it should have some minor usability improvements. I’m still thinking about how I want to work covers and other e-book property info into the UI. I’ve got three places in mind as to where it could go, and I’m not completely happy with any of them. But, I have to get it figured out before Shattered get’s published.

StoryBox 1.2.99 Released

Alright, here’s the story on this release. Basic ePub support is in. You still can’t set all of the properties, and you can’t set cover art or add art into the document, but if you want a quick export to ePub to read on your iPad, iPod, iPhone, Nook, or what have you, it’ll do that.

Picture support, too, is in, but mostly you can only look at them right now.

If these things are limited, why are you releasing them now? Well, there’s this little bug that cropped up again. The scrollbars went missing, again, on the Storyboard, and I need to get that fix out there. The issue is some problem with the development environment always resizing them so they’re only one pixel wide/tall. I think I’ve solved it now so that it won’t happen again (I’m crossing all my fingers and toes here).

StoryBox Exports ePub

Yup, that’s right. The next version of StoryBox will export to ePub format. The question I have for you, and please comment if you feel strongly, is whether to release it before it’s complete.

Right now, it will export an ePub without a cover image. There are also some minor formatting limitations, like not being able to add empty lines just by hitting a few times. You can do it by putting
in your text, but that’s not ideal. It also doesn’t convert urls into clickable links.

However, I think it’s soooo cool that I really want to release it and have some or all of you try it out.

So, do you want to see it this weekend? Or would you rather I wait until it’s reasonably complete?

Note that it’s reasonably easy to open it in Calibre or Sigil and add a cover image.

StoryBox – The Near Future

I will be taking a break from weekly StoryBox updates through the holidays. If some huge bug comes to light, I will, of course, fix it ASAP.

There are two reasons I’m taking the break. The first, of course, is family. We have a lot of gatherings around this time of year, and it’s difficult to skip out on them to code. The second reason is that I am now working on one of the half dozen or so major features that I am adding for 2.0, and it will probably take a few weeks to complete. It’s more complicated than pretty much anything I’ve put into StoryBox so far, and I believe will require a few weeks to complete to a reasonable level of quality.

StoryBox 1.2.97 Released

After much effort the last few days, StoryBox 1.2.97 is here, and fixes the problem that caused the removal of 1.2.96.

One thing I’m really pleased with on this build is that the likelihood of causing seizures when a document loads is greatly reduced. The on screen blinking and flashing of the UI is greatly reduced, and you may notice document load speed improvements, especially when loading a project that had many documents open in it.

It also maintains the window layout in each project separately. If you exited the project having two documents side by side, it will now remember that.
